    Speaking of atmospheric flight compared to space: Season 1 of B5 had numerous engagements between Starfuries and raider ships. Raiders were designed for both space and atmo, and as a result were far inferior to the Starfuries in actual space battles. (Narratively, the raiders were there to provide opportunities to show off space battles before the political situation had developed to where the actual space nations started shooting at one another.)

    If I may.., there is nothing wrong with having a Sci Fi being realistic or unrealistic. The fiction part of Sci Fi allows the film maker to use their imagination without having to worry about whether or that it could happen. As for realism, it allows the film maker to show what could eventually happen. I see the Expanse being a great example of this. After all, one needs to also remember that, "What was once Science Fiction is today's Science Fact" It is possible that what we see as Science Fiction could quite possibly be "Tomorrow's Science Fact."

    I think everybody loves the venator. If fans had more control of starwars I expect you would see like 8 seperate venator varients, ranging from a main line version with less hangers, more guns, and a much less prominent bridge, to a cargo varient, to a sort of super carrier varient that does nothing but carry fighters, perhaps even a pocket venator for system defence and piracy suppresion.

    Surprised you didn't mention Chakotay from VOY, he has an additional role, he's not just XO, but he's also a symbol of unity between the maquis and starfleet crews. Janeway, operating effectively without starfleet oversight, relies on him to keep the two crews from tearing each other apart, but also to check her own behaviour, as he's the only one aboard who she can show any doubt to, to show it to anyone else would undermine her authority irreperably. In this way he's more similar to the XO of a submarine than of a surface vessel, because the vessel has a high degree of autonomy

    Late WW1 to mid WW2 battleships often carried a couple fighters of their own, so I don't begrudge a ship it's own fighter wing(s) if it's big enough to have the hangar space. For example, the Enterprise D could handle 4 Peregrine fighters in the shuttle bays, and probably a couple more in each cargo bay a shuttle can fly into. As for carriers in "direct" combat, that would depend on the scale. The larger your ship the more the squared / cubed law favors going truely excessive with your armor & internal systems, giving you less to fear from direct combat.

    One thing that doesn't make sense, is why even have massive battleships in the first place? Like, the only ships Aliance could encounter are probably small makeshifto ones from the rebels. It's very costly to casually maintaining a fleet this large and complex when all you face is a few troop transports and civilian-class vessels converted for rebel needs. Were they expecting to face aliens?

    Riker's lack of career progression is **completely** in character for him, though. On the very first episode of the series they introduce his relationship with Troi and his regret over his decision to pursue his career first. I know it's a popular trope to make fun of his stagnant career as a lack of character development, but it's actually really good character development. Also, when not in war time, military personnel don't get promoted that often. 7 years in the same job is pretty common in a peacetime standing military. (Though, Riker not getting forcefully promoted during the fleet rebuilding after Wolf 359 is a little sus.)

    For guns in space, I imagine a liquid cooling system where the coolant is stored in the interchangeable magazine with just enough liquid for the heat generated from mag dumping the firearm. The coolant is sucked into a tube which is coiled around the barrel and covered by the fore grip. It evaporates and is ejected as gas.

    Oh no. I just thought of the ultimate fuck you missle. The orion drive missle. You would need to launch it out of a railgun but by its nature it would be almost impossible to stop, accelerate at hundreds of gravities and be fitted with the biggest nastiest bomb you have access to. Results everyone is dead. Downside the missle is really bad at steering.

    With regards to ship production/procurement with lots of classes, one thing that you didn't mention is how the number of ship classes/types can be affected by cronyism. For example, in the setting I'm writing, there are prominent families that own military shipyards, so there is a vested interest within the fleet and the government in keeping those various private yards churning out warships. Also, referring again to my own setting, I've come to the conclusion that no all ships need commissioned officers. This is why I'm making all FTL-capable commissioned ships in the fleet that are not primarily combat units the purview of warrant officers and "ship's masters" rather than a proper commissioned officer assuming the position of Captain. Which leads to situations like the ship itself is commanded by a Warrant Officer, but the "mission" component (ie: hospital ship, or mobile repair platform) are commanded by medical/engineering officers, who have no authority over "ship" functions.

  • @pcheintz7264
    @pcheintz7264 День тому

    The problem with saying "smaller" is that "smaller" varies by series, so saying for example that Normandy is too large is not accounting for the fact it is a smaller ship in the series it is part of. Likewise, Defiant is small for the time in Trek compared to Excelsior, Galaxy and Sovereign classes. The NX Enterprise class is small when compared to Vulcan and Andorian cruisers of the time. Conversely the Millenium Falcon in my eyes was too cramped, even a star trek runabout felt roomier.

  • @CosmicAggressor
    @CosmicAggressor День тому

    These are all well and good but I also want to specify that the whole star trek exploding console thing is stupid, and detracts from the danger. Especially when it is a case of your shields are still up and a random console just exploding killing a passing red shirt. Because in the future we have completley forgotten what breakers are.

    Hmm I was thinking of pirate ships designs. Mostly the contrast between the 2 basic schools of thought of what they should look like. You have things like firefly and stellaris where pirate ships look like they were slapped togeather from random crap and dead ships. The 2 transports a small asteroid and a bunch of spikes and guns aproach. On the other hand you have things like starwars, star trek, and b5 where pirates seem to practically have there own ship classes built by professional dockyards for the explicit purpuse of piracy or at least war/pirate suppression. Then yea there is the futurama aproach of having a sailing ship with engines but those don't seem to count outside of cartoons.

    You are wrong in this case. The farscape starburst mechanic is a sort of indeterminate fixed exit thing. As evidenced by the time they entered starburst without enough power for a complete jump and sort of got wedge in between realities. I also want to expand a bit on ftl via time travel. Because in theory your alternate dimension could be the much smaller early universe. Using entropy to your advantage but also being a case of taking a short cut through hell since the early universe was major chaotic.

  • @CosmicAggressor
    @CosmicAggressor День тому

    Worth noting that b5 covered pretty much everything you mentioned. Which is not surprising since it has a much stronger reality signature than pretty much any other show.

    I think people neglect the one thing fighters and carriers would be indispensable at in science fiction: close air support. Instead of jumping your big, slow, and oftentimes atmospheric incapable destroyers to provide orbital bombardment support (which could also be disrupted by shields, comms jamming, etc) and possibly get shot down by surface to orbit guns, aerospace fighters can coordinate with JTACs on the ground, and also achieve air superiority, which may not be possible from space depending on the weapons and datalinks available in the setting.

    The Executive Officer also oversees the "watch bills." (Or does them himself/herself.) In other words, putting every crewmember and officer (except the Captain) on the daily watch schedule, ensuring that each of the ship's functions is served by competent people each and every hour of each and every day and night.

    I was reminded of The Fallen World, which is a science fantasy series. Someone from a space navy setting gets stranded in a magical fantasy world. Space ships are lost tech but they have airships and some of the same stuff applies. A lot of the fleets in this setting are cobbled together with whatever airships they can get their hands on. An exception to this is the MC's fleet, which is made of ships she developed and built herself. It is limited by the time and resources it takes to make them and she goes through development. Still, she retrofits captured ships rather than building new ones. Currently, she has two or three ship types in her fleet.

    I think the main things that would determine a theoretical space navy's composition in real life would be: #1 Drive tech, and #2 manned or unmanned. If drives are huge, you will see big and few capital ships like in Avatar. If drives are small you'll see stuff like Expanse or Star Wars. Also, if the navy is mostly automated (which let's be honest, why wouldn't it be) then small and numerous crafts become the obvious tactic, but we rarely see this played out in sci-fi because we need humans for the narratives to be interesting.
